Claire Bear

I took Claire into the audiology department this morning to get her hearing tested and she PASSED!  We're very happy that so far she shows no signs of the hearing loss that Charlie was diagnosed with.  She'll go back annually for re-checks.  Good news!

RAC

We're officially summer members of the Rochester Athletic Club!  We love it so far!  Nick also loves it because we're out of the house when he's working!

Summer break is here!

We've had a couple doctors appointments, but other than that it has been ALL fun!  Yesterday we went to Silver Lake Park and then visited Grandma Virginia.  Today we went for a walk at Quarry Hill, went to the park and checked out some books at the bookmobile.  We're going to check out Thursday's on First when  Nick gets done working for the day.  Ahhhhh...this is the life!

Charlie's routine at "Gramma Ginia's house"

2.  Eat candy
3.  Cuddle in bed with Grandma

CT scan results

The results from Charlie's CT scan are normal.  There are no malformations in either ear.  So, that means we don't know the cause and probably never will.  Mayo will continue to monitor his hearing in both ears and we will get a hearing aid for him.  I'm happy that so far he still has one good ear and that he has already adapted very well to his hearing loss.  He shows no delays in language, speech or vocabulary.  The good news :)

Charlie Update

As many of you know, Charlie didn't do well on his hearing checks during preschool screening.  We were referred to Mayo for an audiogram and other tests.  He has significant hearing loss in his right ear.  Today they did a CT scan to see if part of his inner ear is malformed (we're waiting for the results).  He passed his newborn screening so as of now we aren't sure what the cause is.  We may never know if the CT scan is normal.  It could be genetic, an illness, etc.  The only thing we know is it's not fixable with tubes or surgery.  We'll be going back to Mayo for a hearing aid consultation on June 12th.

Bamber Valley (the school I teach at) services all DHH (deaf and hard of hearing) kids in the Rochester School District, so Charlie will be attending there.  He'll start preschool in the fall.  He will go M-TH mornings and be two doors down the hall from my classroom.  I'm happy that he will be going to a great school and that it will be paid for by the district. There are great teachers in this program that will take very good care of our Charlie Bear :)

Trying to stay positive and get him the help he needs so he can be successful in school!
